How to cook the perfect roasted turkey with seasoning
Roasted turkey is a classic dish often prepared during festive occasions like Thanksgiving or Christmas. Here's a basic recipe for roasted turkey along with the seasoning needed:
Ingredients:
- 1 whole turkey (about 12-14 pounds)
- Salt and pepper
- Olive oil or melted butter
- Fresh herbs (such as thyme, rosemary, and sage)
- Garlic cloves (optional)
- Onion (optional)
- Lemon or orange slices (optional)
- Chicken or turkey broth (for basting and gravy)
Instructions:
1. Thaw the turkey completely if it's frozen. This usually requires several days in the refrigerator. Make sure to remove the giblets and neck from inside the turkey cavity.
2. Preheat your oven to 325°F (165°C).
3. Rinse the turkey under cold water and pat it dry with paper towels. Season the inside of the turkey cavity generously with salt and pepper.
4. If desired, stuff the cavity with fresh herbs, garlic cloves, onion wedges, and lemon or orange slices. This step is optional but adds extra flavor to the turkey.
5. Truss the turkey legs with kitchen twine to help it cook evenly and retain its shape.
6. Place the turkey breast-side up on a roasting rack set inside a roasting pan. Rub the entire surface of the turkey with olive oil or melted butter. Season the outside of the turkey with salt, pepper, and additional herbs.
7. Cover the turkey loosely with foil, tenting it over the breast. This helps prevent the breast from drying out too quickly during cooking.
8. Roast the turkey in the preheated oven, basting it every 30 minutes with chicken or turkey broth. Basting helps keep the meat moist and adds flavor.
9. Cook the turkey until the internal temperature reaches 165°F (75°C) in the thickest part of the thigh without touching bone. This typically takes about 13-15 minutes per pound for an unstuffed turkey.
10. Once the turkey is done, remove it from the oven and let it rest for at least 20-30 minutes before carving. This allows the juices to redistribute throughout the meat.
11. Carve the turkey and serve with your favorite side dishes and gravy made from the pan drippings.
Adjust the seasoning and herbs according to your taste preferences, and feel free to add other spices or ingredients to customize the flavor of your roasted turkey. Enjoy your delicious meal!
