This almost destroyed Earth in 1859!

Most space terrors happen very far from you in space and time, but not The Carrington Event. This geomagnetic storm happened on Earth in 1859 when a coronal mass ejection from the sun hit our planet. Strange colorful auroras, brighter than the moon were seen all over the planet, and telegraph machines everywhere failed with some reporting they burst into flames. If a similar event happened now (and it could at any time) our entire power and communication grid could be knocked out in an instant.
