Mongrel dogs: do you know who they are? With the practice of adoption in focus, mutts have been placed in the center of debates ranging from abandonment of animals to responsible pet ownership; through the remarkable tendency that many still have to buy dogs considered "breed" or pedigree. However, even being in the focus of heated discussions about adoption, breed preference and abandonment, mongrel dogs are still not understood by many - being considered as participants of this specific 'classification' due to reasons much more cultural than, in fact, physical. Also called by the acronym SRD (which indicates that the animal is Non Breed Defined), the mutts can be defined as dogs that are not originated from the crossing of a single breed - being, therefore, product of the mixture between the most different types, sizes, pedigrees and styles of dogs. Because of this, the group of mutts is quite extensive, since it highlights and includes every type of dog whose breed cannot be defined with certainty and which is of mixed-breed origin. However, what makes this term is widely applied to different animals nowadays has not much to do with race; but, yes, with abandonment. As a result, most of the animals that live on the streets - regardless of their origin or pedigree - end up being classified as mongrels, earning this name due to their living condition, and not because of their mixed-breed condition. Taking into account that the term is also used, for a long time, to define human conditions and characteristics (usually in a pejorative way), it becomes even more difficult to clarify people in relation to the real meaning of the definition of 'mongrel' - keeping these animals, still, in the center of a series of debates. However, while the general public may still have trouble defining the SRD, there is already a large group of animal advocates who are working hard to raise awareness about mutts - investing time, effort and heavy amounts of money to give them the prominence and importance they deserve in the animal world. A great example of this can be seen in the project Vira-Lata Documentary; a film produced to clarify the public's view in relation to this specific group and show a little more about the different characteristics of these animals, in addition to the difficulties they face throughout their lives - either by living on the streets or by the simple fact of not being 'recognized' as they should (although there is already a strong trend pointing to SRD dogs with an increasingly popular status). To enable the release of the film and, consequently, the public awareness - the Vira-Latas Documentary has a special campaign on the Kickante page, seeking the help of the SRD lovers so that the feature can be shown throughout the country. Each donation received brings the documentary a little closer to its release, and the animal lovers who donate will have their names included in the acknowledgements of the film - which already has a number of famous supporters, as well as major companies and ventures partners in the pet world.
