Himalayan geography. The Himalayan range is about 2400 km long, from Nanga Parbat in the west to Namche Barwa in the east. The width varies between 250 to 300 km. The Himalayas consist of three parallel ranges, arranged according to altitude and geological age. The Himalayas are one of the extraordinary natural wonders, being about 1,500 miles long and about 200 miles wide. The Himalayas are the third largest ice deposits in the world after Antarctica and the Arctic. There are about 15,000 glaciers along the Himalayan range and the Siachen glacier is the largest at about 48 miles long. The Himalayas stretch in northeastern India and pass through India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, China, Bhutan and Nepal. With such a large area the Himalayas become a varied geographical landscape. Even though it is a region of ice and snow, at the base of the Himalayas there are green valleys and dense forests.
