In September 2020, it was announced that work on a prequel to The Lion King would begin, with Jenkins slated to helm the film and Nathanson wrapping up a screenplay draft. August 2021 saw the announcement of Pierre and Harrison Jr. as the voice cast, with additional casting taking place between September 2022 and April 2024. When the official title of the movie was disclosed at the 2022 D23 Expo in September 2022, it was formally unveiled. July 2023 saw a slowdown in the film's production because of the SAG-AFTRA strike of 2023.
