Cristiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro (born 5 February 1985) is a Portuguese professional footballer who plays for Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr FC as a forward and also captains the Portugal national team. Often regarded as the best player in the world and widely regarded as one of the greatest players of all time, Ronaldo won five Ballon d'Or awards[note 3] and four European Golden Shoes. He has so far won 32 trophies in his career, including seven league titles, five UEFA Champions Leagues, one UEFA European Championship and one UEFA Nations League. Ronaldo holds the record for the most goals (134) and assists (42) in the Champions League, the most goals in the UEFA European Championship (14), and the most international goals by a male player (111). He is one of the few players to make over 1,100 appearances in his professional career, and scored more than 780 official goals for both club and country. Born and raised in Madeira, Ronaldo began his senior club career at Sporting CP, before signing for Manchester United in 2003 aged 18, winning the FA Cup in his first season. He went on to win three successive Premier League titles, the Champions League and the FIFA Club World Cup. At the age of 23, he won his first Ballon d'Or. Ronaldo became the most expensive football player at the time when he signed for Real Madrid in 2009 for a fee of €94 million (£80 million), where he won 15 trophies, including two La Liga titles, two Copa del Reys and four Champions League titles, as well as becoming Real Madrid's all-time top goalscorer. He has also been runner-up for the Ballon d'Or award three times, behind Lionel Messi, and won back-to-back Ballon d'Or in 2013 and 2014, and again in 2016 and 2017. In 2018, Ronaldo signed for Juventus for an initial fee of €100 million (£88 million), making it the most expensive transfer by an Italian club and the most expensive for a player over 30 years of age. He won two Serie A titles, two Italian Super Cups and an Italian Cup, before returning to Manchester United in 2021. Ronaldo made his international debut with the Portugal senior national team in 2003 aged 18 and has since made over 170 caps, making him the most capped player for the Portugal national team. With over 100 goals at international level, he is also the all-time leading scorer for the national team. He has played and scored in 11 major tournaments; he scored his first international goal at the 2004 UEFA European Championship, where he helped Portugal reach the final. In 2015, Ronaldo was named the best Portuguese player of all time by the Portuguese Football Federation. The following year, he led Portugal to their first major tournament title at the 2016 UEFA European Championships, and received the Silver Boot as the tournament's second top scorer. He also led the national team to the title in the inaugural UEFA Nations League in 2019, and later received the Golden Boot as the 2020 UEFA European Championship top scorer. One of the most famous athletes in the world, Ronaldo was ranked as the world's highest-paid athlete according to Forbes magazine in 2016 and 2017 and the most famous athlete in the world according to ESPN from 2016 to 2019. Time magazine included him in their list of the 100 most influential people in world in 2014. He is the first soccer player and third sportsperson to earn US$1 billion in his career.
