In order to repel and withstand Russia's missile attacks, it is crucial Ukraine has a layered air defence system. Dr James Bosbotinis, a defence and international affairs expert, explained to Forces News, in the video above, how Ukraine's air defence works and how it has changed over the course of the conflict. Until now, he said, "Ukraine's ballistic missile defence capability has been extremely limited", but the Patriot, the US missile system set to be sent to Ukraine, will "provide them with the ability, an added ability, to counter such threats". It takes at least six months of training and a lot of man power to operate this weapon system and from what I gather it failed in gulf war one resulting in a scud hitting a US base in Saudi Arabia which resulted in over 30 personnel being killed so is not very reliable. By the time Ukraine gets its hands on one this proxy war between the US and Russia will more than likely be over with Russia dictating terms unless the US plans to use its own troops who are trained on the system or contractors who are veterans who have operated the system whilst serving and if they go with active duty troops then that is direct confrontation between NATO and Russia.
