In a world plagued by Kaiju, Kafka Hibino promises to enlist in The Defense Force with his friend, Mina Ashiro; years later, he meets Reno Ichikawa; Reno's drive to join The Defense Force reawakens Kafka's promise to join Mina and protect humanity. Kaiju No. 8 follows Kafka Hibino, a 32-year-old man who works as a kaiju corpse cleaner, a job far from his childhood dream of joining the military and fighting the giant monsters. After a small kaiju enters his body, Kafka gains the ability to transform into a humanoid monster with immense power, becoming a hybrid of human and kaiju. He must learn to control this transformation and use his new powers to fulfill his promise to his childhood friend, Mina Ashiro, to join the Defense Force and protect Japan from increasingly powerful kaiju threats.
