Wednesday season 1, episode 3, titled "Friend or Woe," follows Wednesday as she investigates a secret student society at Nevermore Academy and uncovers a family connection to the founding of Jericho.
Key plot points
The Nightshades Society: The episode opens with Wednesday, who was abducted at the end of episode 2, discovering that her captors are members of a student secret society called the Nightshades. The current students, including Bianca and Xavier, have re-established the club after it was disbanded 30 years prior when a "normie" died. Wednesday dismisses the modern club as disappointingly harmless, and rejects Xavier's invitation to join.
Outreach Day: Principal Weems organizes an "Outreach Day" where Nevermore students volunteer for various community projects in the nearby town of Jericho. Weems forces Wednesday to play the cello with the high school band during a celebration. Wednesday, with help from Thing, swaps her assignment to Pilgrim World, where she suspects she'll find more clues about her visions and the monster.
Clues from Pilgrim World: At Pilgrim World, Wednesday explores a museum dedicated to Jericho's founder, Joseph Crackstone, who she saw in a prior vision. She finds a painting depicting a witch burning that features a blonde woman who looks like her. With the help of the young bee enthusiast Eugene, Wednesday breaks into the museum to search for a historical book of shadows.
Goody Addams vision: After touching the ruins of an old meeting house, Wednesday experiences her most vivid vision yet. She witnesses her ancestor, Goody Addams, and her family being accused of witchcraft and burned alive by Joseph Crackstone. The vision reveals that Goody escaped and Wednesday's prophetic visions tie her directly to this historical conflict.
The monster's identity: While in the woods, Wednesday is confronted by the monster but notices its tracks morph into human footprints. She suspects Xavier, but the evidence is washed away by rain.
The statue explosion: To exact revenge on behalf of her ancestor, Wednesday uses Thing to blow up a new statue of Joseph Crackstone during the Outreach Day ceremony. The explosion causes a panic, but Wednesday calmly plays Vivaldi's "Winter" on her cello.
Enid's date: Enid is stood up by Ajax for their date. It is revealed that Ajax accidentally turned himself to stone while taking a shower, thanks to catching his reflection in the mirror.
New questions: Principal Weems and Mayor Walker are shown to have a secret agreement. Meanwhile, Sheriff Galpin discovers photographic proof that the monster is real after it kills a homeless man who had been at the old meeting house. The episode ends with several loose ends, including a mysterious encounter with Xavier, and hints about the true allegiances of Marilyn Thornhill.
