Orangutans are the only great apes living in Asia and are the world's largest arboreal animals, spending most of their lives in trees. There are three recognized species of orangutan: the Bornean orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus), the Sumatran orangutan (Pongo abelii), and the Tapanuli orangutan (Pongo tapanuliensis). All three species are critically endangered. They are known for their high intelligence and ability to use simple tools such as sticks or stones to aid in daily activities. Orangutans play a vital role in forest ecosystems as seed dispersers of the fruits they eat.
