    Malin Kundang is a famous Indonesian folktale from West Sumatra that tells the story of an ungrateful son. Malin was a poor young man who left his village to seek a better life. Years later, he became a rich merchant and married a beautiful woman.
When he returned to his hometown, his old mother came to greet him with joy. However, Malin felt ashamed of her poor appearance and refused to acknowledge her as his mother. Heartbroken, the mother prayed to God to punish her ungrateful son. Her wish was granted  Malin Kundang was turned into stone on the shore as a symbol of filial disobedience.
