Snake Fruit Growth Process
The growth of snake fruit begins with a salak palm developing sturdy, thorn-covered stems and long, narrow leaves. As the plant matures, clusters of compact flower buds appear at the base of the palm, close to the ground. These buds gradually open into small, creamy-white or yellowish flowers, which are pollinated naturally by insects.
After successful pollination, the flowers transform into small, round fruit buds. These buds slowly expand and develop into young salak fruits, protected by sharp thorns surrounding the fruit cluster. As the fruits grow, their outer skin begins to form overlapping scales, giving salak its distinctive snake-like texture.
During the ripening stage, the fruit enlarges, and its skin changes colortypically from pale yellow-brown to deeper reddish-brown. Inside, the flesh becomes firm, fragrant, and sweet-tart, with one to three hard, dark seeds.
When fully ripe, snake fruit is easily recognizable by its glossy, scaly skin and rich aroma. At this point, it is ready to be harvested and enjoyed fresh.
