Imagine a village where temperatures drop to -71C, -96F. Here, spending just a few minutes outside can result in frostbite, limb loss, or even death.
I'm in the coldest inhabited place on Earth, at the coldest time of year. This is Oymyakon. To stay alive, I'm wearing over 20 layers of clothing, weighing almost 14 kilograms. Stepping out of a warm house at 30C means facing a temperature drop of over 100 degrees. That's why I'm also wearing gloves, boots, pants, and a coat, all made of reindeer fur. Even that isn't enough. And now, I'm going to show you what life is like when simply going outside becomes a battle for survival.
The cold weather doesn't just affect humans and wildlife. It shuts down everything. Cell phones don't work properly and often die. Cars left outside freeze within hours. Because the ground is always frozen, no fruits or vegetables can grow here.
We boarded a plane in Moscow and flew east for seven hours to Yakutsk. From there, we traveled 18 hours and 900 kilometers by road. The moment we got out of the car, it felt like we were on another planet. Our nose hairs were frozen, and we felt them prickle with every breath. The dry air made us cough uncontrollably.
Oymyakon is home to about 800 people, spread across 1.5 square kilometers. It was almost impossible to see anyone outside; the village felt abandoned.
