Claude Debussy's third and final sonata, completed in 1917, marked the final chord of the great impressionist's career. This work is part of a planned cycle of six sonatas, which the composer was never able to complete.
Despite his serious illness, the sonata's music is full of refinement and elegance. In three movementsAllegro vivo, Intermède, and FinaleDebussy masterfully combines classical form with an innovative harmonic language. His typical soundscapes are absent; instead, there is a compressed expressiveness, a transparent texture, and a dialogue between the equal parts of violin and piano. The sonata reflects the composer's evolution toward greater rigor and intimacy, while remaining subtly "Debussy-esque" in its harmonic freedom and subtlety of mood. It is a poignant farewell from a genius to the world of music.
