The Sinfonia Concertante in D major by the French composer François-Joseph Gossec is a brilliant example of musical neoclassicism of the late 18th century. Originally written in 1773 for the ballet "Mitza," this work represents a rare and sumptuous genrea dialogue between two harps accompanied by an orchestra. The symphony's music is imbued with the grace and luminous festivity characteristic of pre-revolutionary French art. The harp parts, echoing and merging in harmonious unity, create a shimmering, sparkling sound. The orchestra (strings and brass) not only accompanies but actively participates in the development of the themes, lending the work scale and dynamism. The three-part structure (fast-slow-fast) demonstrates the clarity of classical form and virtuoso mastery of instrumental color.
This work is not only a tribute to the fashion for pastoral themes and the "antique" style, but also a testament to the innovation of Gossec, who was one of the first in France to appreciate and introduce the expressive potential of the harp into a symphonic context.
