The story follows two young Portuguese Jesuit priests, Sebastião Rodrigues (Andrew Garfield) and Francisco Garupe (Adam Driver), who embark on a perilous journey to locate their mentor, Father Cristóvão Ferreira (Liam Neeson). Ferreira is rumored to have renounced his faith under torture, and the young priests refuse to believe it. Traveling secretly into Japan, they discover small communities of hidden Christians who cling to their faith despite the threat of imprisonment, torture, and execution. The priests minister to these villagers in secret, but their presence endangers the locals, drawing the attention of the ruthless inquisitor, Inoue. Captured, Rodrigues witnesses the extreme suffering inflicted on Japanese converts. Instead of torturing him directly, the authorities force him to watch innocent believers suffer and die unless he publicly renounces his faith. Rodrigues is tormented by doubt, feeling abandoned by God amid the silence of suffering. His inner struggle deepens when he finally meets Ferreira, who has indeed apostatized and now lives as a Japanese scholar. Ferreira insists that Rodrigues must also step on a fumi-e (a carved image of Christ) to save lives, arguing that true faith may sometimes require outward betrayal. In a harrowing climax, Rodrigues tramples the image, hearing Christs voice granting him permission. He lives out his days outwardly as a Japanese but secretly retains his faith.
