Suite No. 12, performed today in its arrangement for classical guitar, vividly demonstrates this duality, combining formal rigor with a richness of emotion. The key of E minor imbues the music with a distinctive character: a luminous sadness, a clear and sublime melancholy that is not oppressive but rather thought-provoking. De Visée develops this mood through a traditional sequence of Baroque dances, each of which acquires its own unique character: Allemande is a serious and extended introduction, reminiscent of a leisurely, thoughtful speech. Courante is a lively and refined dance in which a clear melody intertwines with lively polyphony. Sarabande is the dramatic and concentrated core of the cycle, where each chord resounds with particular weight and expressiveness. Gavotte is graceful and lively, bringing a breath of fresh air and elegant simplicity. The minuet is restrained, noble, and elegant. The gigue is the finale, delivered with virtuoso brilliance and energy, concluding the suite on a major, luminous chord. Javier Andia's performance is a benchmark of style and depth. His technical mastery is entirely at the service of the music: the most complex passages and embellishments sound natural and meaningful, and the guitar's timbre under his fingers is a stunning array of colors—from the velvety bass to the crystal-clear upper register.
