The Inspiring Story of the Well of Uthman (RA)

The Well of Uthman is one of the most beautiful examples of charity in Islamic history. When Muslims migrated to Madinah, there was a shortage of fresh water. A well known as Bir Rumah was owned by a Jewish man who used to sell its water. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) encouraged the companions by saying that whoever purchases the well and makes it free for the people will be rewarded with Paradise. Hearing this, Uthman ibn Affan (RA) bought the well and dedicated it as a charity for the Muslims. This act became a lasting Sadaqah Jariyah (continuous charity), and its benefits continued for generations in Medina.
