British actress Jane Lapotaire, who had notable roles on “Downton Abbey” and “The Crown,” has died. She was 81.
Lapotaire died on March 5, according to the Guardian. A cause of death was not provided.Boasting a lengthy and prolific career on stage and on television, Lapotaire co-founded The Young Vic theater company in 1970 with Laurence Olivier. She also performed with the Old Vic and the Royal Shakespeare Company.To modern TV viewers, she is probably beset known for playing Princess Irina Kuragin during the fifth season of “Downton Abbey,” and for playing Princess Alice of Greece on two episodes of Netflix’s “The Crown” in 2019.
She won critical acclaim and a Tony Award in 1981 for playing the title role in “Piaf,” a Broadway musical about the famed French singer Edith Piaf
