This historic audio recording from 1950 conveys the drama and mature passion of one of the composer's most significant chamber works. We present a rare recording from the golden age of performance. Isaac Stern (1920–2001), one of the greatest violinists of the 20th century, renowned for his melodious, rich tone and virtuosic brilliance, performs in perfect tandem with Alexander Zakin (1903–1990). Zakin was not just an accompanist but a full-fledged partner, with whom Stern collaborated for many years. Their 1950 interpretation is distinguished by the monumentality and profound lyricism characteristic of the post-war performing style. The Violin Sonata No. 3 in D minor, Op. 108, is Brahms's last and most ambitious violin sonata. Written between 1886 and 1888, it is dedicated to the composer's friend, the conductor and pianist Hans von Bülow. Unlike the two previous sonatas, this work is in four movements and is imbued with dramatic, even tragic, moods, particularly felt in the powerful first Allegro and stormy finale. Only for a moment does the listener find peace in the tender Adagio. Structure of the work (Timestamps): 0:00 - I. Allegro 7:50 - II. Adagio 12:29 - III. Un poco presto e con sentimento 15:24 - IV.
