Natural Star Sapphire from Sri Lanka, also known as Ceylon Star Sapphire, is one of the world’s rarest and most valuable gemstones. It belongs to the corundum mineral family and displays a unique star-like reflection called “asterism,” usually showing a six-ray star moving across the surface when exposed to light. This natural phenomenon is created by tiny rutile inclusions inside the stone.
Sri Lankan Star Sapphires are highly respected in the international gem market for their exceptional color, natural clarity, and strong star effect. These gemstones are commonly found in shades of blue, grey, black, purple, pink, and white. Most high-quality stones are cut in a smooth cabochon shape to maximize the visibility of the star.
The finest Natural Star Sapphires mainly come from the gem-rich region of Ratnapura, famously known as the “City of Gems.” Sri Lanka has produced some of the world’s most legendary sapphires, including the recently unveiled “Star of Pure Land,” recognized as the largest natural purple star sapphire ever discovered.
With a Mohs hardness of 9, Star Sapphire is extremely durable, making it ideal for luxury jewelry such as rings, pendants, and bracelets. Genuine unheated Sri Lankan Star Sapphires with strong, centered stars and natural certification are considered premium collector gemstones worldwide.
