Watch: Hindus cleanse themselves of their sins by dipping into the Ganges River
Thousands of Hindus gathered at the Ganges River and the Bay of Bengal in the village of Gangasagar Mela, to take a dip in the waters of the river on the occasion of Makar Sankranti, a festival of great importance and religious significance. As each of the pilgrims who immerse themselves in the Ganges River, according to Hindu beliefs, his soul will be purified from all sins forever. A Hindu believer in this ritual says that one festival can be frequented several times, but visiting Gangasagar is obligatory for every Hindu at least once in his life. Another Hindu says that the pilgrimage to Gangasagar is so sacred that everyone who dies there reaches the stage of Nirvana, and his soul is purified from all sins.
