Avatar is a science fiction film released in 2009, directed and written by James Cameron. The film is set in the year 2154, and follows the story of Jake Sully, a paraplegic Marine who is sent to the planet Pandora to participate in a program that involves the use of a genetically engineered body, called an "Avatar," to interact with the native population, the Na'vi. The story centers around Jake's journey as he becomes more and more entrenched in the culture and way of life of the Na'vi people, and ultimately must choose between his loyalty to his fellow humans and his growing connection to the Pandora and the Na'vi. The film was a commercial and critical success, grossing over $2.8 billion worldwide, making it the highest-grossing film of all time, until it was overtaken by Avengers: Endgame in 2019. The film was praised for its groundbreaking visual effects and its thought-provoking themes of environmentalism, imperialism and cultural appropriation. Avatar was nominated for nine Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and won three for Best Cinematography, Best Visual Effects, and Best Art Direction. The film's success led to plans for several sequels, with the first, Avatar 2, set to be released in 2022.
