A masterpiece of Russian classics: Vasily Kalinnikov's Suite for Orchestra in B minor (1891–1892) in a benchmark performance by the State Academic Symphony Orchestra of the USSR (GASO) under the baton of the great conductor Yevgeny Svetlanov.
Immerse yourself in the atmosphere of authentic Russian Romanticism of the late 19th century. The Suite for Orchestra in B minor is an early, yet incredibly mature and poetic work by Vasily Sergeevich Kalinnikov (1866–1901), a composer with a tragic fate and a remarkably luminous musical gift. Written during his years of study in Moscow, the suite is imbued with vibrant lyricism, vibrant orchestral tones, and subtle folk motifs reminiscent of the traditions of Tchaikovsky and Arensky. The recording is performed by the legendary ensemble, the USSR State Academic Symphony Orchestra. Maestro Evgeny Svetlanov, an outstanding defender and interpreter of undeservedly forgotten pages of Russian music, monumentally and carefully reveals the entire score of the work.
The musical canvas consists of four contrasting sections:
00:00 — I. Andante. A profound, contemplative introduction with extended and warm string melodies.
10:32 — II. Allegro scherzando. A joyful, rhythmically capricious, and light scherzo.
14:48 — III. Adagio. The suite's emotional center, a large-scale and deeply lyrical revelation.
33:32 — IV. Allegro moderato. A festive, dynamic finale, uniting all the orchestral sections in a powerful sound.
