Tenali Rama Story

Here is a famous Tenali Rama story: Tenali Rama and the Thieves Once, during a hot summer, Tenali Rama noticed that thieves were watching his house. He knew they planned to steal his valuables at night. Instead of panicking, Tenali whispered to his wife loudly enough for the thieves to hear, "All our jewels and gold are unsafe in the house. Let's put them in this large wooden chest and throw it into the well. No one will ever find them there." The thieves heard every word. After dark, they waited for Tenali to sleep. Then they began drawing bucket after bucket of water from the well, hoping to find the chest. They worked the entire night, exhausted from removing so much water. What they didn't know was that the chest contained only stones! Meanwhile, Tenali used the water flowing out of the well to irrigate his dry garden. By morning, the thieves were tired and empty-handed. When they finally found the chest and opened it, they discovered only rocks. Tenali laughed and thanked them, saying, "You have worked all night to water my garden. I couldn't have done it better myself!" Ashamed, the thieves ran away and never returned. This tale is one of the many folk stories associated with Tenali Ramakrishna, celebrated for his wit and clever problem-solving.
