Legends of King Vikramaditya (Vikrama) blend history and folklore from across India, celebrating him as an ideal warrior-king famed for courage, wisdom and justice. Key sources include the Vetala Pañcaviṃśati (the 25 Vetala tales within Somadeva’s 11th-century Kathāsaritsāgara) and the Simhāsana Dvātriṃśikā (Singhasan Battisi), a medieval Sanskrit collection of 32 throne-stories. Common motifs are betrothal to duty, encounters with supernatural beings (ghosts, yogins, apsaras), and tests of dharma (righteousness) through clever puzzles and moral dilemmas. Principal characters are Vikramaditya himself – brave, generous and true – and figures like the Vetala (a corpse-haunting spirit) or statued apsaras who guide or test him. Though the tales span many eras, they universally unfold in an ageless ancient India, often giving general clues (e.g. “ancient Ujjayinī”) rather than fixed dates. The stories stress virtues such as honour, selflessness, and forgiveness, using a frame narrative (beginning with a divine challenge, a series of conflicts or riddles, a dramatic climax, and a resolution with moral insight).
