Nelson Mandela was a South African anti-apartheid revolutionary, political leader, and philanthropist who served as President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999. He was the country's first black head of state and the first elected in a fully representative democratic election. Mandela was born in 1918 in the village of Mvezo in Umtata, then a part of South Africa's Cape Province. He was a member of the Thembu royal family. Mandela was educated at the University of Fort Hare and the University of Witwatersrand before working as a lawyer in Johannesburg. In 1962, he was arrested and convicted of sabotage and other charges, and sentenced to life in prison. Mandela served 27 years in prison, mostly on Robben Island. Following his release in 1990, Mandela led his party, the African National Congress, in the negotiations that led to the establishment of democracy in 1994. As President, he frequently gave priority to reconciliation, while introducing policies aimed at combating poverty, inequality and discrimination. Mandela received more than 250 honors—including the Nobel Peace Prize—and became a global icon of freedom and equality.
