rooster
A rooster, also known as a cockerel or cock, is a male chicken. Roosters are distinguishable from hens by their larger combs and wattles (the fleshy protuberances on the head and neck), their longer, thicker feathers, and their larger size. Roosters also have a spur on their leg, which hens do not have. They are known for their loud crowing, which they use to establish dominance and territory, and to signal to other roosters and hens. They also play an important role in the protection of the flock. In terms of breeding, roosters fertilize eggs laid by hens but they do not have any direct involvement in the incubation or care of the chicks. Roosters can be used for meat and also in cockfighting which is illegal in many countries.
