The only known LIVE recording of Janis Joplin singing Mercedes Benz during her last concert at Harvard stadium, Boston on August 12, 1970. Bootleg recordings of Janis Joplin's performance, made by members of the audience, were later released as the album "Wicked Woman" 1976. "Mercedes Benz" is a mostly a cappella song written by the American singer Janis Joplin with Bob Neuwirth and the poet Michael McClure. The song's lyrics were written down at Vahsen's, a bar in Port Chester, New York, on August 8, 1970, during an impromptu poetry jam between Joplin and songwriter Bob Neuwirth. The lyrics are from by a poem written by the San Francisco beat poet Michael McClure, "Mercedes Benz".
