South African Passes: Meiringspoort and Seweweekspoort, Recommended Thomas Bain Canyon Passes

Meiringspoort (N12) and Seweweekspoort R323), off the R62, are two great canyon passes through the Swartberg. Meiringspoort is a well travelled pass between Oudtshoorn in the Western Cape and Beaufort West in the Karoo while Seweweekspoort is an off the beaten track dirt road canyon pass near Calitzdorp. Thomas Bain designed and built many of South Africa's mountain passes in the mid 1800s, some which still operate today.
