7 Passes Rd: Karatara Pass, #5 In The Oldest Road Link Between George And Knysna, Western Cape
The Seven Passes Road on the Garden Route, completed in 1883, is the oldest direct road link between George and Knysna in Western Cape, South Africa. The road which traverses seven passes was engineered by Thomas Bain and Adam de Smidt.
The Seven Passes: Kaaimansgat (or Kaaimans), Silver River, Touw River, Hoogekraal [ https://www.febspot.com/video/3372264 ], Karatara, Homtini (Goukamma), and Phantom Pass.
Scenery: Crosses deep river gorges, indigenous afro-temperate forests, and rolling farmlands just south of the Outeniqua Mountains.
At the time of filming the first three of the passes, from the George side were closed to traffic and the currently open road can be accessed from Hoekwil, above Wilderness, or Knysna
