Michael Jackson's concert in Brunei, held on July 16, 1996, is considered one of the most legendary, expensive, and curious performances of the King of Pop's entire career. The show was commissioned by the Sultan of Brunei, Hassanal Bolkiah, to celebrate his 50th birthday. It is estimated that Michael Jackson received between $15 million and $20 million (in 1996 currency) for this single performance. The concert took place at Jerudong Park and was attended by an audience of approximately 60,000 people. Brunei is a conservative Muslim country with strict codes of conduct. Mindful of this, Michael Jackson toned down his signature provocative moves—such as his famous crotch-grabbing gesture—out of respect for local laws and the religious authorities in attendance. The show took place between two major eras. The stage setup, costumes, and most of the production elements were identical to those of the *Dangerous World Tour* (which had already concluded).
