African Rock Python mating
The mating ritual of the African Rock Python (Python sebae) is a dramatic and competitive physical display.
Breeding Season: Mating typically occurs during the cooler dry season (November to March, depending on the region). Females release potent sex pheromones to attract males across long distances.
Male Combat: Multiple males often follow the scent trail to a single receptive female. When they meet, males engage in intense combat, intertwining their bodies, wrestling for leverage, and attempting to pin each other down while using their vestigial leg spurs to scratch and push rivals away.
Courtship & Copulation: The dominant male courts the female by crawling over her body and flickering his tongue to detect her receptivity. He uses his small hind spurs to stroke her flanks and lower body, stimulating her to raise her tail. Copulation can last several hours.
Egg Laying & Maternal Care: Females lay large clutches (typically 20 to 100 eggs) in burrows, termite mounds, or rock crevices. Unusually for reptiles, the female coils tightly around her eggs for nearly three months, defending them fiercely and shivering her muscles to generate body heat (maternal thermoregulation) until they hatch.
