In 1969, America built a machine so enormous that it looked almost impossible to be real. Standing nearly 22 stories tall and weighing around 13,500 tons, Big Muskie was one of the largest machines ever built. But its incredible size was only part of the story. This massive American mining machine could actually WALK. Built by Bucyrus-Erie for coal mining operations in Ohio, Big Muskie was designed to move enormous amounts of earth while advancing across the mine on a gigantic walking mechanism. For more than two decades, this mechanical giant dominated the landscape of southeastern Ohio. Today, Big Muskie is gone. The machine was dismantled in 1999, leaving behind photographs, memories, and its enormous bucket preserved in Ohio. So how did America build something this massive in the first place?
