King Andrianampoinimerina was the ruler who dreamed of a united Madagascar. In the late 18th century, Madagascar was divided among rival kingdoms and rulers. Andrianampoinimerina reunited much of Imerina, strengthened the kingdom, reorganized its administration, and laid the foundations for what would later become the Kingdom of Madagascar. His famous vision was simple but enormous: "The sea is the boundary of my rice field." He died in 1810 before achieving that dream, but his son Radama I continued his expansion and conquered much of the island.
