Antarctica Is Turning Green—But Why

Antarctica’s snow can turn green—but it is not the entire continent. The green color comes from microscopic algae growing on coastal snow, especially around the Antarctic Peninsula during the warmer summer months. Using satellite images and field observations, researchers identified 1,679 separate green algae blooms. Together, they covered about 1.95 square kilometers of snow. These algae can absorb carbon dioxide, but scientists also warn that warmer conditions may allow the blooms to spread. So, is Antarctica turning green—or is this a warning sign of a changing climate?
