The Invisible Lightning That Shoots Gamma Rays
Not all lightning can be seen by the human eye. Deep inside powerful thunderstorms, intense electric fields can create incredibly energetic flashes of gamma rays called terrestrial gamma-ray flashes, or TGFs.
These invisible flashes last less than a millisecond, yet their gamma rays can carry tens of millions of times more energy than visible light. NASA’s Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope has detected thousands of these mysterious flashes from orbit
