The Pacific Ocean Is Losing Its Green Color
Satellite observations show that parts of the Pacific Ocean are losing their green color. This change may be linked to lower concentrations of phytoplankton—the microscopic organisms that help form the base of the ocean food web.
During El Niño conditions, warmer surface water can reduce the upwelling of nutrients, causing surface chlorophyll levels to decline in some parts of the Pacific. The ocean may look bluer, but the real change is happening in the tiny life hidden beneath the surface.
