Marine iguanas and their feeding habits
This excerpt from the documentary showcases one of the unique animal adaptations found in the Galápagos Islands: the underwater feeding behavior of the marine iguana, the only reptile on the planet that feeds in the ocean.
Feeding and Nutrition: Marine iguanas rely entirely on marine algae, which grow abundantly in the region thanks to nutrients brought by the Cromwell Current. Their flattened snouts and sharp teeth act as an efficient tool for scraping algae off underwater rocks.
Respiration and Breath-holding: Unlike seabirds such as the cormorant (which must surface frequently), the marine iguana can complete a dive lasting up to 30 minutes on a single breath.
Thermal Challenge: As an ectothermic (cold-blooded) animal, the iguana faces the constant risk of muscle stiffening if it stays in the freezing water for too long.
Interactions and Obstacles: While returning to the surface, the reptile must contend with curious sea lions and battle strong breaking waves to reach dry land before losing all its strength due to a drop in body temperature.
