Millipedes are cylindrical or somewhat flattened invertebrates. They are not insects—they are actually more closely related to lobsters, shrimp, and crabs. There are 7,000 species of millipedes in the world, and 1,400 of them are found in the United States and Canada. Smaller millipedes measure less than one inch (2.5 centimeters) in length, but common spirobolid millipedes can grow to more than five inches (13 centimeters). #animal
