the moon weal ear JUPITER
On October 6, 2026, the Moon will hide Jupiter from view—a planet about 40 times wider than the Moon itself!
This phenomenon is called an occultation: a slender crescent Moon passes directly in front of Jupiter, causing the planet and its four large moons to temporarily vanish from sight before reappearing less than an hour later (the exact duration depends on your location). This particular occultation will only be visible from certain parts of the world, such as North America and Africa; it will not be visible from Indonesia. Lunar occultations of Jupiter are rare events; only about 123 of them will be visible worldwide between 1980 and 2040.
Jupiter’s diameter is more than 11 times that of Earth, and it could fit about 1,300 Earths inside it (by volume). The "40 times" figure refers to the comparison in width (diameter), not volume.
The visuals here were created using AI for illustrative purposes. In the actual night sky, Jupiter appears as a bright point of light, and its four moons are only visible through a small telescope.
