Gravitational Waves: Ripples in Spacetime
Gravitational waves are incredibly faint ripples that travel through spacetime, created by some of the universe’s most powerful events. When massive objects such as black holes or neutron stars collide and merge, they can release gravitational waves that spread outward across the cosmos. These waves carry information about distant cosmic events that cannot be observed through ordinary light. Scientists use extremely sensitive detectors to measure these tiny distortions in spacetime. The first direct detection of gravitational waves in 2015 opened a completely new way of observing the universe. Today, gravitational-wave astronomy helps researchers explore black holes, neutron stars, and cosmic evolution.
