Time Dilation Near a Neutron Star
Neutron stars are among the densest objects in the universe, packing enormous mass into a relatively small sphere. Their extreme gravity strongly curves spacetime around them. According to Einstein’s theory of relativity, clocks closer to a massive object can run slower compared with clocks farther away. This effect is known as gravitational time dilation. Near a neutron star, the effect can become significant because of its intense gravitational field. Scientists study these extreme environments to test general relativity and understand how gravity behaves under extraordinary conditions. Neutron stars therefore provide fascinating natural laboratories for exploring the relationship between gravity, space, and time.
