The Ghostly Galaxy
Some galaxies are incredibly faint and spread out, making them difficult to detect even with powerful telescopes. These are known as ultra-diffuse galaxies. They can have sizes comparable to much brighter galaxies while containing far fewer visible stars. Scientists believe many of these mysterious galaxies may contain large amounts of dark matter, although their exact nature and formation are still being studied. Their extremely low surface brightness makes them challenging to observe against the dark background of space. Studying these ghostly galaxies helps astronomers understand galaxy formation, dark matter, and the large-scale structure of the universe. They remind us that galaxies can exist in surprisingly different forms, sizes, and densities.
