The Two-Leaf Plant That Has Survived Over 1,000 Years in the Namib Desert
In 1859, in the Namib Desert of southern Angola, botanist Friedrich Welwitsch found a plant he could not name. Only two leaves lay flat on the sand. They never stop growing and never fall, even as the desert wind splits them into long ribbons.
In a place where rain is almost nothing, this plant survives by drinking fog drifting in from the Atlantic Ocean each morning. Some individuals are estimated to be over a thousand years old. The oldest may still be alive today, but nobody knows which one.
A short documentary in a hand-cut paper collage style about Welwitschia mirabilis, one of the strangest plants on Earth.
Watch to the end, and tell us in the comments: which natural wonder should we cover next?
