Who is the chess player named Donald Byrne?
Donald Byrne (June 12, 1930 – April 8, 1976) was an American university professor and chess player. He held the title of International Master and competed for his country in the Chess Olympiad on several occasions. Born in New York City, Byrne was a professor of English. He taught at Pennsylvania State University from 1961 until his death, having been invited there to teach and to coach the varsity chess team. Before his time at Penn State, he was a professor at Valparaiso University in Indiana.
Who is Robert James Fischer?
Robert James Fischer, a.k.a. Bobby Fischer (March 9, 1943 – January 17, 2008) was an American chess grandmaster and the eleventh World Chess Champion. Fischer made many lasting contributions to chess. Chess literature regards his 1969 book, My 60 Memorable Games, as essential reading. In the 1990s, he patented a modified chess timing system that added a time increment after each move, now a standard practice in top tournament and match play. He also invented Fischer random chess, also known as Chess960, a chess variant in which the initial positions of the pieces are randomized to one of 960 possible positions.
