How did Rome Collect Taxes?
How Rome REALLY Collected Taxes 🏛️💰
Ever wonder how the greatest empire in history paid for its armies, roads, and gladiator games? The answer is way crazier than modern taxes!
During the Roman Republic, tax collection was completely outsourced to private corporations called Publicani. The Senate would auction off whole provinces to the highest bidder. These private tax collectors paid Rome upfront, then marched into provinces with armed guards to extract as much gold, livestock, and land as they could keep. It was legal extortion!
When Augustus Caesar became Emperor, he realized this corrupt system was causing constant rebellions. He fired the private tax farmers and launched giant imperial censuses—logging every citizen, piece of land, and crop yield across the Mediterranean.
Watch to find out how Rome collected billions in gold, silver, and millions of tons of Egyptian grain to fuel an empire!
