Penguins are typically associated with colder climates, such as Antarctica and the southern coasts of South America, Africa, Australia, and New Zealand. However, there is one species of penguin that lives in a much warmer climate: the African penguin.
African penguins, also known as jackass penguins, are found along the southwestern coast of Africa, in Namibia and South Africa. They live in colonies on rocky, sandy shores, and are well-adapted to the hot climate of their habitat, with a thick layer of downy feathers and the ability to pant to cool off. African penguins are also able to tolerate high temperatures and low humidity in their burrows.
African penguins are a vulnerable species, with a decreasing population due to habitat destruction, oil spills, overfishing, and disease. Conservation efforts are currently underway to try to protect and increase the population of African penguins.
In the IELTS listening test, you may expect to hear about African penguins in the context of their habitat, population, conservation efforts, and other related information.
