Neurotransmitters are chemical messengers that facilitate communication between nerve cells (neurons) in the nervous system. They are released from the terminal boutons of a presynaptic neuron and bind to specific receptors on a postsynaptic neuron, leading to changes in the electrical and chemical properties of the postsynaptic neuron and, as a result, transmitting the information.
