Ramadan is a holy month in the Islamic calendar, observed by Muslims worldwide. It is the ninth month of the lunar calendar and its timing is based on the sighting of the new moon. The month of Ramadan is significant because it is believed to be the month in which the Quran was first revealed to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). During Ramadan, Muslims fast from dawn until sunset, abstaining from food, drink, smoking, and other physical needs during the daylight hours. The fast is broken at sunset with a meal called iftar, which is typically a communal gathering with friends and family. In addition to fasting, Ramadan is also a time for increased prayer and spiritual reflection. Muslims are encouraged to read the Quran more frequently during this month, and many mosques offer nightly tarawih prayers, which are extra prayers offered after the obligatory night prayer. Ramadan is also a time for giving to charity and showing compassion to those in need. Many Muslims choose to give a portion of their wealth to charity during this month, and it is common to see increased acts of kindness and generosity towards others. At the end of Ramadan, Muslims celebrate Eid al-Fitr.
